Long ago, we had two yew bushes on either side of our front door. One winter, the deer decimated both plants, and because yews are apparently delicious to deer, I replaced them with two hollyberry shrubs. These supposedly taste like crap to the deer; plus, they do well in the shade.
So far the hollyberries are doing fine.
As I was weeding last summer, I found the remnants of one of the old yew bushes, dug it up and stuck it in a pot. As you can see by my picture, there is new growth on the yew, and I have to interpret that as a good sign.
Happy new yew!
