Last night, I saw the iconic Richard Lewis do stand-up comedy at SOPAC (South Orange, NJ Performing Arts Center). Mike Jacobs opened for him. It was a fantastic show.
I’d never seen comedy in the state of New Jersey before, and I wondered if audiences there might be somehow different from those of New York, Connecticut or Massachusetts. As it turned out (and as you might have expected), it mostly boiled down to the “oys”.
A woman in the bathroom, on her cell: “Saul! I can’t believe moy oys!”
Two yentas shouting across the audience, before showtime: “Moy daughter just got married, by that Rabbi Paul. He’s such a noice goy!”
Conversation I had with a woman during intermission: “My mother had fibroids.”
And then we learned that Richard Lewis’ wife’s name is Joyce.
It was a memorable evening – and quite the opposite of annoying.
